Once upon a time, the world of Spira experienced a golden age of perfection, achieved through an advanced civilization utilizing a miraculous technology called "Machina".

However, around a thousand years ago, a vast menace known only as "Sin" tore through everything it passed through. Although the Summoner Sin has been suppressed many times, it still keeps returning in an endless cycle of destruction. With this ever-present threat, the people of Spira have fallen prey to the teachings of Yevon, which say that Sin is a punishment for those who have relied too much on Machina.

Tidus is a young Blitzball star who mysteriously finds himself in the world of Spira after his home city of Zanarkand is destroyed by Sin. Believing that Sin is the key to returning home, Tidus teams up with a young summoner named Yuna on her journey to destroy Sin once and for all.
