"... In 982, Erik the Red, a Viking jarl, discovered a new land while sailing from the west coast of Iceland. He named it Graenaland, the green land. Four years later, the first colonists arrived in Graenaland and founded settlements that lasted for over four centuries. ..."

In this game from the workshop of the best Czech author Vládi Chvátil, each player has the role of one of the jarls who leads their clans to a new home. It is up to you how you agree with others, how you divide the raw materials that the landscape provides. You can fertilize the land, cultivate it or you can build palisades ...

Graenaland successfully uses some of the elements known from Settlers of Catan. Players acquire resources with which to build settlements and other useful buildings. However, the method of obtaining resources and the construction options significantly differentiate the game from Settlers at first glance.
The settler element of chance is significantly eliminated here. Raw materials are provided by individual territories. However, there is a small catch. Each territory can have buildings built by several players, and some of the heroes may also appear there, perhaps with their army. The distribution of raw materials is therefore subject to voting. Players must use their diplomatic skills to ensure that their proposal is accepted. It is not advantageous to subsidize your opponent too much, on the other hand, if you are stingy, no one will support your proposal and you will have nothing.

Another interesting idea is that in each round, one player is the so-called main player. Only he is allowed to build. He can also invest resources in some public buildings. These help all players who have at least one settlement on the territory. Other players may (but do not have to) help the main player with the construction of one public building. Before the main player thinks about what and where to build, the other players submit proposals for the distribution of resources, which are immediately voted on.

Like the entire game, the victory conditions are also very interestingly solved. When playing according to the extended version of the rules, the player must earn at least 6 points to win. However, how they earn them is entirely up to them. There are five types of goals. Each goal has three levels. For completing any level, the player is rewarded with one victory point. The difficulty of completing each goal is given by a card that the player chooses before the start of the game and which they do not show to others during the game. So no one actually has an accurate overview of how well each of their opponents is doing in completing the goals.
Graenaland is certainly a more complex and demanding game than Settlers of Catan, but anyone who likes business and communication games will definitely enjoy it!
