Gameplay:
Mario Tennis Open is an arcade tennis game that can be played in both single-player and multiplayer modes. The playable characters are familiar faces from games set in the Mushroom Kingdom. The individual courts on which the matches will take place are also inspired by them. They bring different properties with them. Their surface affects, for example, the bounce and speed of the ball. For the first time in the series, it will also be possible to play as yourself! Just choose your Mii cartoon, which you will also be able to customize further in the game.
Known playable characters so far: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Yoshi, Boo, Bowser, Bowser Jr., Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Waluigi, Wario, Mii
Known courses so far: Mario Stadium (clay), Mario Stadium (hard surface), Mario Stadium (grass), Mushroom Valley (hard surface), Wario Dunes (sand), DK Jungle (wood), Bowser's Castle (stone), Pinguin Iceberg (ice), Peach's Palace (carpet)
Control:
The Nintendo 3DS brings with it several control options and Mario Tennis Open makes full use of them. You control the players with the analog Circle Pad, which you also aim with. With the action buttons or their combinations, you have all kinds of strokes at your fingertips. Alternatively, you can also select them via the touch screen. You then look around the court with the movements of the consoles.
Multiplayer:
For multiplayer, there is a local wireless connection for four players including support for the Download Play function. Thanks to it, you will only need one game cartridge. For the first time in the series, you will also be able to play online! Mario Tennis Open uses the new Nintendo Network service, through which you will be able to play online either with your friends or find suitable opponents from your region. For victories, you will earn medals and, in addition, you will climb up the online rankings. In addition, you will be able to create online groups, similar to Mario Kart 7.
StreetPass:
Mario Tennis Open also supports StreetPass, allowing you to play matches with random players you meet on the street without having to lift a finger. You'll receive coins for any rewards you get, which you can use to upgrade your players' equipment.
