The ingeniously programmed Teamvision artificial intelligence, which was created specifically for Konami games, is able to learn and adapt to the playing style of individual players. Therefore, it can develop new ways of leading an attack or learn to thwart certain moves of the opponent and learn from previous mistakes in attack and defense, resulting in a better harmony of the computer game with the tactical, but dynamically developing real game.

As with all previous games in the series since its inception in 1996, the ball is a separate object and the timing of the kick is entirely up to the player, while new artificial intelligence ensures that defenders cooperate to close down space to deny the opposition a chance to score. The same goes for passing distribution: players use the space they have at their disposal to pass the ball to each other. Dribbling control has also been significantly improved, with a range of finer movements added to allow players to slip past opposing defenders and move the ball into space.

Thanks to the collaboration with Teamvision, every aspect of the game on the pitch in Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 has been reworked and fine-tuned to create a balanced and strategic game at a high level. Kit components have been improved and the number of players is now fully customizable, as is the position of the defensive wall. Players also have a wide range of options to make the most of the specific talents of athletes in their team.
