After the Fellowship of the Ring has fallen apart, the second installment of the Lord of the Rings saga follows the journey of lone heroes Frodo Baggins and Sam to Mordor, where they will be able to destroy the Ring. The rest of the Fellowship - Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli - set out to rescue Merry and Pippin from the Uruk-hai. The reborn Gandalf, who fought the Balrog and won, joins his companions. They head to the city of Rohan, where they try to convince King Théoden of the inevitability of war. Meanwhile, Merry and Pippin manage to escape and hide in Fanghorn Forest.

Frodo and Sam continue to approach Mount Doom, but everyone tries to make their journey difficult. Gollum even wants to steal the Ring, but is eventually forced to help them on their way.

The climax of the film is the Battle of Helm's Deep, where humans, alongside elves led by Aragorn, Théoden, Legolas and Gimli, fight against Saruman's monsters...
