The story takes place in the hot summer of 1992, six months before the division of Czechoslovakia. Young detective Richard Krauz is brought to a new case - the corpse of the churchwarden Klokner with a nail in his head has been dug up in a cemetery.
Krauz discovers that the former StB and a never-found file documenting the crimes of priests, on the basis of which the StB blackmailed the church, are behind his torture.

Obsessed with the case, Krauz sets out across the crumbling Czechoslovakia in search of the man to whom all clues lead: the Red Captain, a specialist in "ultimate" interrogations. But Krauz is not the only one looking for him...
