The inhabitants of Rohan were known to outsiders as the Loin Rohirrim, or Horse Lords, in reference to the close affinity they had with their horses. In fact, among all the tribes of Men there were no better riders. The Eorlings, named after the followers of the line of Eorl, founded the kingdom of Rohan.
They were a proud people, living mostly in small settlements scattered across the Plains of Mark, as Rohan was also known. The largest of these was Edoras, where King Théoden dwelt in the closing days of the Third Age. During the War of the Ring, Théoden led the Rohirrim to Helm's Deep when they were betrayed by Saruman the White, and later led a large number of Riders to the aid of Gondor, where they helped save the city of Minas Tirith. The Rohirrim resisted Sauron, fought alongside their Gondorite allies at the Black Gate, and cemented their alliance in the years that followed with the marriage of Lady Éowyn of Rohan to Faramir, Steward of Gondor.
