Tirpitz was a Bismarck-class battleship of the German Kriegsmarine. Named after German Admiral Alfred von Tirpitz, it was the largest battleship in the world until the arrival of the Japanese battleships Yamato and Musashi. The colossus, with a displacement of 50,000 tons, carried eight 380 mm naval guns as its main armament.
Tirpitz, after the unfortunate fate of her sister ship Bismarck (sunk by the British on her first Atlantic campaign), withdrew to the Norwegian fjords and by her mere existence tied down a significant British naval force to protect convoys to Murmansk. The British eventually managed to sink the ship by air attack while the ship was already permanently anchored off Tromso, Norway.
