Fort Matanzas

This is a military fortress that was intended to serve as a defense against enemy invasions of the country. Fort Matanzas was built by slaves and convict soldiers from Cuba in 1740, when Florida was part of the Spanish Empire. The fort with its watchtower stands on what is now Rattlesnake Island. Many workers did not survive the construction. They were threatened not only by the difficult working conditions, but also by predators, alligators, poisonous snakes and dangerous insects. The area around the fort was swampy, where it was impossible to move without risking their lives. The walls of the fort are built of so-called shelstone - shells reinforced with solidified sand. The fort had a strategic location, located in an inaccessible landscape full of swamps and salt marshes. The riverbed was shallow and the low water level prevented large warships from entering the strait.
