Aqueduct

An aqueduct is an artificial waterway   bridge, part of a water supply or waterworks   channel, providing the supply   water   from the water source to the place of its need or consumption. Sufficiently large aqueducts can also be used as   canal   for   ships,   or they can be used for transporting raw   wood. In   ancient times   wooden and stone aqueducts were built, in   modern age   already bricked and then also with steel   constructions. Originally they were used mainly for irrigation, later they were increasingly used to supply cities with water. Nowadays, aqueducts are mainly built as navigation and irrigation canals . The oldest Roman aqueduct was   Aqua Appia, 16 km and 445 m long. It began in   altitude   30 meters and ended at 20 meters above sea level. He had it built in   312 BC   Appius Claudius Caecus. The longest ancient aqueduct is   the Valens aqueduct, which brought water to   Constantinople.
